Despite comments on a variety of subjects regarding the FAA’s proposed Special FAR mandating training for Mitsubishi MU-2 pilots, the agency has made changes to only one part of the proposal. Yesterday, it issued a supplemental notice of proposed rulemaking, redefining pilot experience requirements. The requirement for pilots to obtain initial/transition training would now apply to pilots with fewer than 50 hours’ MU-2 flight time in the past two years instead of the zero hours in the initial SFAR proposal. For pilots with 50 or more hours in the past 24 months, requalification training will suffice. The previous requirement allowed pilots to have any amount of documented MU-2 flight time in the past 24 months. A pilot would also be required to complete requalification training if more than 12 months have elapsed since initial/transition, requalification or recurrent training. Comments on these proposed changes are due February 2.
