A recent notice sent to Honeywell GNS-XLS owners confirmed what many had suspected all along: due to hardware limitations, the flight management system will be ineligible for upgrade to WAAS functionality. Honeywell is offering a software upgrade for the GNS-XLS covering precision area navigation (PRnav) in Europe and compliance with AC 90-100 for new U.S. Rnav requirements, but any future WAAS capability appears doubtful, according to the avionics maker. List price for the upgrade is $10,000. Honeywell said it is extending a $3,000 price discount through the end of the year. Owners of Honeywell GNS-X and CDU-XLS hardware, meanwhile, will need to replace those units with GNS-XLS boxes to take advantage of the full range of upgrades, which includes a new 20-megabyte memory expansion card.
