Aerus, a new regional airline in Mexico, has conditionally agreed to purchase 30 <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/aircraft-program/alice">Alice</a> commuter airplanes from Washington state-based electric aircraft developer Eviation. The two companies announced on January 17 that they had signed a letter of intent covering the deal.
According to Eviation, <a href="https://flyaerus.com/">Aerus</a> aims to use the nine-seat, fully electric commuter airplane for “middle-mile” travel over areas of northern Mexico including Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, Coahuila, and Veracruz—regions that have been historically underserved by aviation.
“Our aircraft is an ideal fit for Aerus as a large number of flights in northern Mexico are already less than 250 miles,” said Eviation president and CEO Gregory Davis. “We are always pleased to receive the endorsement of forward-thinking airlines that are keen to address the climate challenge and be part of the future of aviation.”
Aerus is based in Monterrey, the capital of the northeastern Mexican state of Nuevo León. The airline was established in May of 2022 and expects to begin operations in the first quarter of this year. While initial routes will cover northeastern Mexico, the airline plans to introduce longer national and international flights. In addition to the 30 Eviation Alice aircraft, Aerus has&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/air-transport/2022-12-27/textron-announces-first-airline-order-skycourier">ordered two Cessna 408 SkyCourier twin turboprops</a> and four Cessna Grand Caravan EX turboprop singles.
“As we enter into service, our objective is to create new opportunities for regional travel in Mexico that are environmentally and economically sustainable," said Javier Herrera García, CEO of Aerus. "Working with Eviation to bring a zero-emissions fleet to our region will transform the way we experience air travel and connect communities."
Eviation’s Alice became the world’s first fully electric commuter airplane to fly when it conducted a<a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-09-27/eviations-alice-electric-aircraft-starts-flight-test-campaign">&nbsp;test flight</a> over Moses Lake, Washington, in September 2022. The aircraft is initially expected to offer a range of about 250 nm on a single charge, although Eviation has said it expects the range to increase to 440 nm as new and improved battery technology becomes available.&nbsp;
The Alice, which is expected to enter service in 2027, will be available in three models. In addition to the nine-seat commuter airplane, the company will offer a more luxurious <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2021-12-10/eviation-unveils-executive-version-alice-first-flight-nears">“executive” version</a> with six seats, as well as a cargo-carrying version that can transport up to 2,600 pounds of payload.&nbsp;
Aerus is just the latest of a slew of customers&nbsp;that Eviation has attracted in the past year, and the company now has an order backlog exceeding $2 billion. Other buyers&nbsp;include the Australian airline and charter operator <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-11-10/australian-airline-orders-20-eviation-alice-all-electric-commuter-airplanes">NTAS</a>, German regional carrier <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-10-19/evia-aero-orders-25-eviation-alice-electric-commuters">Evia Aero</a>, Massachusetts-based regional airline <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-04-18/cape-air-eviation-sign-letter-intent-covering-75-alice-electric-aircraft">Cape Air</a>, and Miami-based charter and cargo flight provider <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-09-15/air-charter-firm-globalx-orders-50-eviation-alice-all-electric-aircraft">GlobalX</a>.

Mexican Airline Start-up Orders 30 Eviation Alice Electric Commuter Airplanes

Electric aircraft developer Eviation has received an order for 20 <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/aircraft-program/alice">Alice</a> all-electric, nine-seat commuter airplanes from the Australian airline and charter operator Northern Territory Air Services (NTAS), the Washington state-based manufacturer&nbsp;announced on November 10.&nbsp;
NTAS is a family-owned and -operated airline coincidentally based in Alice Springs, a town in Australia’s Northern Territory. The company offers scheduled airline services and charter flights, as well as scenic aerial tours, air safari experiences, and cargo flights to remote areas across Australia. Its location in Alice Springs offers a convenient link for passengers of major airlines arriving at and departing from airports in Uluru and Mount Isa.&nbsp;
“Australia is recognized around the world for its breathtaking scenery, and adopting carbon-free technologies is fundamental to preserving the environment for future generations,” said Ian Scheyer, CEO of NTAS. “Eviation’s all-electric Alice aircraft provides us with the opportunity to chart a sustainable path forward in connecting communities across the country. With the adoption of electric aviation, we will be able to provide cost-effective and convenient passenger and cargo flights across the outback.”

Eviation’s order book for its electric airplane is now worth more than $2 billion. In recent months, the company has signed letters of intent with several airlines around the world, including the German regional carrier&nbsp;<a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-10-19/evia-aero-orders-25-eviation-alice-electric-commuters">Evia Aero</a>, Massachusetts-based regional airline <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-04-18/cape-air-eviation-sign-letter-intent-covering-75-alice-electric-aircraft">Cape Air</a>, and Miami-based charter and cargo flight provider Global Crossing Airlines Group, also known as <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-09-15/air-charter-firm-globalx-orders-50-eviation-alice-all-electric-aircraft">GlobalX</a>.
The all-electric Alice made its <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-09-27/eviations-alice-electric-aircraft-starts-flight-test-campaign">debut test flight</a> over a desert area in Washington state in September, and Eviation expects the aircraft to enter service in 2027 when the company will also make its first deliveries. Initially, the Alice is expected to have a range of about 250 nautical miles, although the company has said it aims to achieve a longer range of about 440 nm when available battery technology improves.&nbsp;
In addition to the nine-seat commuter model, Eviation is offering a cargo-carrying version of the Alice aircraft, which can transport loads of&nbsp;up to 2,600 pounds. The company also plans to provide&nbsp;an <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2021-12-10/eviation-unveils-executive-version-alice-first-flight-nears">executive version</a> of the Alice, with a more spacious and luxurious cabin that can seat six passengers.

For FutureFlight editor Hanneke Weitering, witnessing the long-awaited first flight of Eviation's <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/aircraft-program/alice">Alice </a>electric aircraft meant a trip from her Seattle area base to Moses Lake in Washington state and a pre-dawn start. The <a href="https://futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-09-27/eviations-alice-electric-aircraft-starts-flight-test-campaign">flight itself </a>only last eight minutes but the visit yielded significant new information about the program as she shared in a video discussion.&nbsp;
The company has acknowledged that limitations of current battery technology have meant a reduction in its initial range target to 250 nm in VFR conditions. It says that meets expectations of early airline customers for the nine-seat aircraft, with type certification now pushed back to 2027.

FutureFlight Witnesses Eviation's Alice Electric Aircraft Making Its First Flight

Eviation has achieved a long-awaited first flight with its&nbsp;all-electric <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/aircraft-program/alice">Alice</a>&nbsp;aircraft, which&nbsp;it is developing for both commuter airline and private aviation applications.&nbsp;The battery-powered, fixed-wing prototype&nbsp;took off at 7:10 a.m. local time&nbsp;from Grant County International Airport in Moses Lake, Washington, and landed eight minutes later after flying two circuits at 3,500 feet.
The September 27 flight, with test pilot Steven Crane at the controls,&nbsp;marks a significant milestone in the development of the Alice aircraft, which is designed to carry up to nine passengers and two pilots up to 250 nm (460 km) in VFR conditions.&nbsp;In addition to the commuter model, Eviation plans to offer a cargo-carrying Alice with a payload capacity of 2,500 pounds (1,100 kilograms), as well as an <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2021-12-10/eviation-unveils-executive-version-alice-first-flight-nears">executive version</a> that seats six passengers. Two <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2021-05-13/magnix-propulsion-system-delivered-eviation-prepares-alices-first-flight">MagniX Magni650</a> electric propulsion units power the aircraft.
Eviation has quietly changed the published range for the Alice from 440 nm to 250 nm in VFR conditions. The company told&nbsp;FutureFlight that customers have been briefed on the new "target" and are "aligned," while adding that the aircraft will also be able to operate in IFR conditions.

The company has pushed back the program timeline so that first deliveries are now not expected until 2027, around three years later than first anticipated. Company CEO and president Gregory Davis told a press conference that the delay is due to the need for improved batteries.&nbsp;It will not build and fly a production-conforming prototype until 2025 in preparation for certification under FAA's Part 23 rules for small airplanes.&nbsp;
"The flight was exactly as planned," Davis told FutureFlight.&nbsp;"The pilot executed the entire flight on the numbers. I was watching from just outside the telemetry room and as he hit every single point, it was just such a thrill," he said. "We couldn't be happier."
Eviation, which is based in Arlington, Washington, first unveiled a full-scale prototype of the Alice aircraft at the Paris Air Show in June 2019. Anticipating excessive type certification complexity, and in response to input from prospective customers, the company substantially redesigned this model, replacing its distinctive V-shaped tail with a new T-tail configuration and moving its MagniX Magni650 electric propulsion units from the wingtips to a pylon mount at the rear of the fuselage.
Eviation’s engineering team expects the new configuration to improve stability in flight. It says the relocated, larger propellers will deliver more power.

The new Alice prototype was revealed in July 2021, and at that time Eviation said it planned to conduct the first test flight before the end of that year. The company did not provide any explanation for subsequent delays, and the debut flight was rescheduled to take place during the summer of 2022—a target that it just missed by about five days.&nbsp;
On September 18, Eviation announced that the Alice had performed a high-speed taxi rotation test at the Moses Lake airport, a sign that the long-anticipated first flight was imminent.&nbsp;
Alice may have taken a bit longer than planned to get off the ground, but that hasn’t stopped Eviation from securing several customers for the aircraft. Earlier this month, the air charter firm <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-09-15/air-charter-firm-globalx-orders-50-eviation-alice-all-electric-aircraft">GlobalX</a> provisionally agreed to purchase 50 all-electric Alice aircraft. Another launch customer, Massachusetts-based regional airline <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-04-18/cape-air-eviation-sign-letter-intent-covering-75-alice-electric-aircraft">Cape Air</a>, has also agreed to purchase 75 Alice commuter aircraft, and <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2021-08-03/dhl-signs-launch-customer-all-electric-alice-freighter">DHL Express</a> has ordered 12 of the freighter version of Alice.&nbsp;
The long-anticipated first flight of the Alice is a significant boost for Eviation. An earlier prototype of the original aircraft design was badly damaged during a <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2020-01-24/fire-damages-eviations-first-alice-prototype-during-ground-testing">battery fire</a> in January 2020. At the time, the aircraft was undergoing ground tests at Prescott Regional Airport in Arizona.

Eviation's Alice Electric Aircraft Starts Flight Test Campaign

Miami-based charter and cargo flight provider Global Crossing Airlines Group, or GlobalX, has provisionally agreed to purchase 50 all-electric <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/aircraft-program/alice">Alice aircraft</a> from Eviation. Eviation announced on Thursday that GlobalX has signed a letter of intent to buy the commuter aircraft, with the first deliveries expected in 2027.
Eviation, an electric aircraft developer based in Washington state, is gearing up for the first test flight of its <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2021-07-01/eviation-unveils-redesigned-alice-electric-aircraft-first-flight-approaches">redesigned</a> Alice aircraft. The company has said that it expects to fly the nine-seat Alice before the end of this summer. Eviation also plans to introduce a cargo version of the Alice aircraft, as well as an <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2021-12-10/eviation-unveils-executive-version-alice-first-flight-nears">executive version</a> that would seat just six passengers. The fully electric Alice produces no carbon emissions and is quieter and cheaper to operate than traditional light jets, according to Eviation.
GlobalX, which began passenger operations in August 2021, plans to use the Alice aircraft to transport travelers between Florida, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean. The charter firm currently operates seven Airbus A320-series aircraft in the U.S., the Caribbean, and Latin America. “Alice will enable GlobalX to introduce new, sustainable flight options for growing markets, including Miami, Orlando, and the Bahamas,” Eviation officials said in Thursday's announcement.
In addition to offering passenger charter flights, GlobalX plans to begin cargo operations in the fourth quarter with&nbsp;15 leased Airbus A321 cargo freighters. The company said it is evaluating the cargo variant of Eviation’s Alice aircraft to support its freight operations as well.&nbsp;
“We are delighted to enter this agreement with GlobalX, whose investment in zero-emissions flight demonstrates the airline’s commitment to cleaner skies, lower operational costs, and the provision of the most innovative options for air travel,” said Eviation president Gregory Davis. “Quieter, smoother, and with a cabin design that defines the future, the in-flight experience aboard the Alice will offer GlobalX passengers a new way to fly.”
GlobalX chairman and CEO Ed Wegel said the charter firm plans “to offer the aircraft to our cruise line, tour operators, leisure travel providers, and business clients with a need for short-haul charter flights across Florida.”
“The Alice aircraft will allow us to offer sustainable, regional flights to and from major markets&nbsp;and is the first step in our initiative to be a zero-carbon emissions airline by 2050,” Wegel added. “We are proud to be a launch customer for Eviation and lead the charge in bringing carbon-free air travel to our passengers.”

Air Charter Firm GlobalX Orders 50 Eviation Alice All-electric Aircraft

Eviation has engaged Parker Aerospace to develop six technology system packages for its <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/aircraft-program/alice">Alice</a> all-electric commuter aircraft. The companies now are entering the design phase for the production and certification phase of the nine-seat aircraft.
Parker plans to produce the six technology systems under development across all divisions within Parker Aerospace and at Parker’s Engineered Materials Group, including Parker Lord.
The systems involved include cockpit controls, consisting of sidestick, throttle, rudder control, and switching devices; the electromechanical flap system, including actuators, electronic control units, and position sensors; and the thermal management system, consisting of water cooling equipment for battery and electric propulsion heat management along with thermal materials for the battery pack.
The contract also includes the provision of hydraulic powerpacks for steering and braking systems, engine and inverter mounts for cabin noise mitigation, and elastomeric static and dynamic seal products such as a fire seal wall.
“Parker is a trusted supplier within the industry, and their solutions will enable us to bring the best all-electric aircraft into the market,” said Eviation president Gregory Davis, president of Eviation. “Like Eviation, Parker has a strong commitment to customer success, and together we will help the industry chart the path forward to all-electric flight.”
In July 2021, Eviation revealed a <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2021-07-01/eviation-unveils-redesigned-alice-electric-aircraft-first-flight-approaches">fundamental redesign</a> of the Alice, which it first unveiled at the 2019 Paris Air Show. After consultation with prospective customers and discovering the availability of more powerful electric propulsion units, it reduced the number of motors from three to two and relocated them from the wingtips to a new T-shaped tail.
The <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-05-30/eviation-says-alice-electric-commuter-set-summer-flight-test-lift">first flight</a> of the Alice remains imminent. In late May, Eviation said it expected the reach the milestone&nbsp;within "weeks"&nbsp;

Eviation Picks Parker for Alice Aircraft's System Packages

Massachusetts-based regional airline Cape Air has signed a letter of intent (LOI) with Eviation Aircraft covering the purchase of 75 all-electric <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/aircraft-program/alice">Alice</a> commuter aircraft, the companies said. The contract signing comes nine months after Cape Air chairman Dan Wolf told a gathering at the Vertical Flight Society’s Electric Aircraft Symposium that the Alice could enter service with his airline as early as 2023 on scheduled routes connecting Boston and the Massachusetts communities of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket as well as linking Nantucket with Hyannis. At&nbsp;that time Eviation and Cape Air ostensibly placed an order in 2019 for the nine-seat Alice, but terms remained undisclosed and Wolf expressed some ambivalence about the economic case. 
“The first thing that Cape Air wants to do is introduce a new technology into a commercial environment that we know is successful,” he said at the time. “If the economics of this are what people think they are going to be, and I’m not convinced yet…there’s an entire panoply of communities [that could benefit].”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
Asked about the distinction&nbsp;between&nbsp;the 2019 "order" at the Paris Air Show and the most recent LOI announcement, an Eviation spokesperson described the Paris agreement as "an optimistic outlook at what the future would bring.
"The technology has advanced since 2019, allowing Alice the opportunity to evolve," she added. "Today, Eviation has converted that optimism into reality."
Now the largest FAA Part 135 commuter carrier in the U.S. with 103 aircraft, the airline points to its experience with introducing new aircraft types to scheduled service as one reason it stands to make the economics work and the operational challenges surmountable. Cape Air 18 months ago debuted the gasoline-powered P2012 Traveller made by the Italian manufacturer Tecnam, with which it has collaborated on some 170 engine and aircraft modifications.
Tecnam is now working with Rolls-Royce to develop an all-electric development of the Traveller, called the P-Volt. The electric airplane's range would fall short of&nbsp;the piston-powered P2012s' reach, but Scandinavian regional carrier Wideroe plans to introduce it on short routes in Norway in 2026.
Following the unveiling of a revised design for the nine-passenger, fixed-wing Alice aircraft last year, Eviation projected that it would perform its first flight from the company’s new headquarters in Washington state by December, presumably in time for the completion of FAA type certification by 2024. After moving the first flight target to this past January, Eviation now projects it to happen this summer but has provided no explanation for the delay to the program.
The new design drawings revealed significant changes from an earlier prototype, with a new T-tail configuration replacing a distinctive V-shaped tail. Eviation relocated the nine-passenger Alice’s two MagniX Magni650 electric propulsion from the wingtips to a pylon mount at the rear of the fuselage. Aircraft specifications show a range of up to around 500 miles at speeds of just over 250 mph.

Cape Air, Eviation Sign Letter of Intent Covering 75 Alice Electric Aircraft

Eviation co-founder and CEO Omer Bar-Yohay is leaving the company just as it prepares for the long-awaited first flight of its <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/aircraft-program/alice">Alice</a> electric aircraft. The U.S.-based firm today announced that as part of a “leadership reorganization” Gregory Davis will replace Bar-Yohay&nbsp;immediately.
In a social media posting on February 14, Bar-Yohay said he is stepping down from the position, "after a long-standing disagreement with the company's main shareholder."&nbsp; Eviation insisted that his departure was, "part of a planned succession process that reflects the company's transition to the production phase," of the program.
The unexpected move comes a little over a month after Eviation’s chairman, Roei Ganzarski, stepped down from the role, and also from that of&nbsp;CEO of MagniX, which is supplying the electric propulsion system for the fixed-wing, nine-passenger Alice. Ganzarski is now CEO of information technology group Alitheon.
Davis has held executive positions with aviation companies&nbsp;including Viking Air and Marshall Aerospace. He joined Washington state-based Eviation in May 2021 as the start-up’s president. Since August 2019, the company has been owned by Singapore-based investment group Clermont, which also owns MagniX. These are the group's first investments in aviation, and it also has interests in healthcare services in Vietnam and financial services.
“Eviation expects to make the first flight of the Alice in the upcoming weeks, having completed many preliminary milestones, including initial taxi and flight test preparations,” said Eviation’s new chairman, Dominique Spragg. “As we complete the technical demonstration phase, Eviation is now preparing for production to make affordable regional air travel a reality in the coming years.”
Last year, Eviation’s engineering team completed an extensive redesign of the Alice, with a T-tail configuration replacing a distinctive V-shaped tail. Alice’s two MagniX Magni650 electric propulsion units have been relocated from the wingtips to a pylon mount at the rear of the fuselage. 
In late January, Bar-Yohay told FutureFlight that&nbsp;changes had been made to simplify the certification process and to respond to customer feedback and a desire to be able to make banked approaches to runways. At the time, Alice’s first flight, which had been expected to occur before the end of 2021, seemed likely to happen imminently. The company has been conducting high-speed taxi tests in recent weeks.

Eviation Co-founder and CEO Leaves Company Before Alice's First Flight

Roei Ganzarski has resigned from his positions as CEO of MagniX and chairman of Eviation Aircraft. In a January 6 posting on LinkedIn, the electric aviation pioneer said that “with a heavy heart” he decided to leave the companies, both of which are subsidiaries of the Singapore-based investment group Clermont.
MagniX is developing electric propulsion units to convert turboprop aircraft such as the Cessna Grand Caravan and DHC-2 Beaver. The company is also providing its Magni 650 system for Eviation’s 11-seat Alice fixed-wing aircraft, which is imminently expected to make a first test flight. Both companies are based in Washington state.
At MagniX chief operating officer Michele D'Ercole has been appointed as interim CEO while the company conducts a search for a permanent replacement. He has been involved in the development of the electric propulsion system since the company's early years in Australia and relocated to its Everett, Washington, headquarters in January 2021.
Meanwhile, Eviation has appointed board member Dominique Spragg to replace Ganzarski as executive chairman. He is chief of aerospace strategy and business architect at the Clermont Group.
Ganzarski became CEO of MagniX in April 2018 and in October 2019 Clermont appointed him as Eviation’s chairman. Previously he spent just over 13 years with Boeing, most recently as chief customer officer for flight services, before joining software group BoldIQ as president and CEO.
