Safe Flight AoA Indicator Now Standard on Cessna 172s
The dash-mounted system uses an LED-lit display and features a pilot-settable reference marker.

Safe Flight’s SCc angle-of-attack (AoA) system is now standard on all Cessna 172 Skyhawks, Textron Aviation subsidiary Cessna announced today at Sun ’n’ Fun 2016. The AoA system has been an option on the Cessna 182 Skylane and 206 Turbo Stationair.


“Textron Aviation is constantly looking for innovative solutions for our piston customers, and making the SCc angle-of-attack system standard on all Skyhawks is a great example of bringing the latest technology to our products,“ said Doug May, Textron Aviation vice president for piston aircraft. Initial deliveries of Skyhawks fitted with the SCc have started.


SCc aligns with the FAA’s objectives of reducing loss-of-control incidents through low airspeed awareness by providing both flashing red LEDs and an aural alert to warn the pilot of increasing AoA and impending stall. The system’s lift transducer measures the wing’s leading edge stagnation point and flow field, which is a precise measurement of AoA regardless of aircraft weight, wing loading, slip condition or center of gravity.


The dash-mounted system uses an LED-lit display and features a pilot-settable reference marker for establishing AoA climb, cruise and approach AoA targets. In addition to low airspeed awareness, the SCc can provide the pilot with AoA-based guidance for a variety of high-lift operational conditions, including normal and short-field takeoff; climb; wind-adjusted AoA cruise speed for maximum range; maximum endurance; and guidance for normal and short-field landings.
