ToughguardAero (TGA) introduced its nano-technology polymer exterior protectant to the aviation industry. It both protects the existing paint and smoothes the surface. According to the company, operational testing and laboratory analysis substantiated the product’s inherent UV protection qualities, high rain-erosion rating, increased fuel efficiency and a reduction in related maintenance overhead.

Martin Boom operates Boom Aviation, an aircraft detailing business and TGA-authorized distributor at California’s Orange County Airport. Boom said the kit comes with two chemicals: one to clean and prepare the surface, and the sealant itself. He told AIN, “This isn’t new technology; it’s been in the automotive, trucking and maritime industries for a long time and is just now being introduced to aviation. It both protects the paint finish and gives the airplane that glossy appearance.”

A light jet application, such as for a Learjet 45, costs $4,500 including aircraft preparation, the chemistry and required application labor. A heavy jet such as a GV would be about $9,500. “It is easy to work with and is environmentally friendly,” he added. TGA says an application is good for five years.
