Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP) and GE have collaborated on a facility to train technicians on GE engines, including the GE90, CF6, CF34 and GEnx. QSTP is located in Qatar Foundation’s Education City, which was developed as a campus to bring together research and business. According to a GE spokeswoman it is the first GE facility of its kind outside North America. “In addition to training Qatar Airways personnel, the center will be used to train GE aviation and energy corporate customers throughout the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia,” she told AIN. The new 144,000-plus-sq-ft center includes five digital classrooms equipped with 3-D graphical models and online teaching capabilities. A hands-on component also forms a core part of the facility, with 14 engine bays for practical aircraft engine training. Programs focus on training for line maintenance, borescope inspection and boro-blend repairs. According to GE, enrollment has already begun and the center expects to provide between 400 and 500 students with certificates from the Doha-based training center annually.
