MTU Aero Engines held a “last bolt” ceremony to mark a major milestone in the development of Pratt & Whitney’s PurePower PW1524G geared turbofan engine slated to be used on Bombardier C Series. The company developed the engine’s turbine, which will now be sent to Pratt & Whitney to be installed on the first PurePower PW1524G engine. The engine will then begin testing procedures. Paul Finklestein, P&W’s vice president of marketing, told AIN, “The PurePower engine using geared turbofan technology offers benefits to operators and passengers. It improves upon traditional engine architecture with the introduction of a reduction gearbox between the drive turbine and the fan, allowing the turbine to operate more efficiently and fan to rotate more quietly. This new technology will provide dependable power while reducing both emissions and noise, improving fuel efficiency and reducing maintenance costs.” He added, “Lowered fuel consumption will cut emissions by up to 3,000 tons per aircraft per year; the engine will also provide a 50-percent reduction in emissions relative to today’s most stringent regulations.”
