The FAA announced a two-year extension of the existing lottery allocation of slot exemptions at New York La Guardia Airport (LGA) until Oct. 31, 2004. In addition, the FAA is asking for public comment on proposed changes to the current procedures for allocating slot exemptions that are either returned or have gone unused. These proposed changes are aimed at maintaining the balance between slots used by new entrant carriers and those used to provide service to small-hub and non-hub airports. For the long term, the FAA issued a notice in June last year seeking comment on several proposed approaches to reduce congestion at LGA. Under one of the approaches, congestion pricing from $350 to $700 for each operation of airliners and general aviation aircraft alike would be assessed during peak periods.
