None of the 34 accidents that befell FAR Part 121 scheduled airlines last year resulted in fatalities, according to NTSB preliminary statistics. In 2001 there were some 266 fatalities involving U.S. airlines (excluding another 265 resulting from the 9/11 hijackings). There were 58 air-taxi accidents last year, down from 72 in 2001, resulting in 33 fatalities compared with 60 in 2001. The air-taxi accident rate was 2.27 per 100,000 flight hours in 2001 versus 1.9 last year. The number of GA accidents and fatalities decreased slightly, from 1,726 total accidents in 2001 to 1,714 last year, but fatalities increased, from 325 killed in 2001 to 343 last year. Despite fewer accidents, the accident rate for GA increased slightly: 6.28 per 100,000 flight hours in 2001 versus 6.56 last year.
