Effective January 1, newly manufactured European-registered airplanes in air-taxi and other commercial operations and having an mtow of at least 12,500 lb or more than nine passenger seats (but fewer than 30) must be equipped with class-A terrain awareness and warning systems (TAWS). A requirement for TAWS retrofits on like aircraft manufactured before January 1 doesn’t go into effect until Jan. 1, 2005. Also, TAWS in FAR Part 91 and 135 multi-engine turbine airplanes won’t be required until March 29, 2005.
