British racing driver Colin McRae was killed when the Eurocopter AS 355 Twin Squirrel he was flying crashed near his home in Scotland on September 15. The accident happened at 4:10 p.m. near Lanark, 27 miles south of Glasgow, and also killed McRae’s five-year-old son and two friends. According to local press reports, there was rain at the time of the crash but visibility was reasonable. Coincidentally, the day after the McRae accident, Dave Richards, chief executive of the Subaru racing team, escaped unhurt when his Eurocopter EC 135 crashed at North Weald Airport, northeast of London. Richards was flying the aircraft and was accompanied by his wife. McRae had previously won the world rally championship while driving for the Subaru team.
