Farnborough Blocked On Movement Increase

TAG Aviation's application for more weekend aircraft movements at the London-area Farnborough Airport was rejected by the local Rushmoor Borough Council. The company, which operates Farnborough under a lease agreement, wants to boost the number of movements permitted each year on weekends and holidays from 2,500 to 5,000 and has offered to introduce this increase incrementally over three years. However, the council's planning committee has ruled that the claimed economic benefits of the increase in business aviation traffic do not outweigh local residents' concerns over aircraft noise. TAG has indicated that it intends to appeal the decision to the UK central government. A relatively high proportion of these appeals are granted. The company is concerned that operators unable to use Farnborough on weekends might become disenchanted with the airport and opt to use other London-area facilities at other times.
