Israel Aircraft Industries’ Bedek Division delivered 22 airliner-to-freighter conversions last year, making 2017 the busiest year yet for this element of the company’s business. Most were delivered to customers in the U.S.
By far the most numerous type was the Boeing 767, of which IAI Bedek delivered 18, representing a three-quarters of the global marketshare for 767 cargo conversions. In achieving this feat, IAI passed the 100-aircraft mark for 767 freighter deliveries, and there are more awaiting conversion and delivery this year. Rounding out the delivery total were two Boeing 737-700s and two 747-400s.
To increase capacity, IAI has opened up a 767 conversion site in Mexico City, operated by Mexicana MRO Services. The company is also establishing two conversion sites in China through joint ventures with local companies. The first aircraft are scheduled to enter the modification process in China in the middle of this year.
IAI Bedek (Stand N41) has been performing airliner conversions for freight and other duties for many years. Last year it became the first company to achieve a supplemental type certificate for the Boeing Next-Generation 737-700 freighter. The modification work includes the installation of a cargo loading door in the port side, installation of a smoke detection system, and an adaptation of the air conditioning system in the central cargo area.
