Garmin has introduced its GTU-10, a personal GPS-based tracking system that allows owners to instantly check via the Internet the location of children, pets, elderly relatives, travel bags and almost anything else of value. Designed for ease of carriage in lunch boxes or pockets, or attachment to backpacks, dog collars and the like, the small (3.1 inches x 1.3 inches x 0.7 inches) waterproof tracking unit weighs 1.7 ounces, including its built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Owners can program up to 10 virtual boundaries or geofences that, when crossed by the unit, trigger a prompt advice to the owner from Garmin via Internet or text message. Past routes that the unit has taken can also be presented.

The system costs $199.99, including one year of tracking service, with annual renewals of the service at $49.99.
