Consolidation of five terminal radar approach control facilities into the new Potomac Tracon, located in Vint Hill, Va., is now complete. The facility incorporates Tracons previously located at Washington Dulles International, Ronald Reagan Washington National, Baltimore-Washington International and Richmond International airports, as well as Andrews Air Force Base. AOPA reports the Potomac Tracon employs about 300 controllers and handles an average of 5,000 flights a day; it is responsible for some 23,000 sq mi of airspace that stretches from the surface to FL230. Later this year the FAA will begin implementing a redesign of the Potomac airspace in the Baltimore-Washington area.
