The General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) has partnered with the International Council of Aircraft Owner and Pilot Associations (IAOPA) to launch the 2020 European General Aviation Survey. The data gathered in the annual survey—opened this week—will aid in providing greater clarity in general aviation flight activity trends, aircraft equipment, and fleet composition for use in safety analysis.

Last year’s edition, which concluded in April, received responses covering 6,000 aircraft in 32 countries, and EASA used the results in its annual Safety Review to calculate accident rates for non-commercial airplanes. This year organizers hope to increase participation to improve the accuracy of the results and ensure all European countries are well represented.

“This survey is an important step for a better understanding of [GA] activity across Europe,” said Dominique Roland, EASA’s head of general aviation, which is supporting the effort. “Conducting this survey on a daily basis will help us focus our improvements for [GA] safety.”

Results of the survey will be released at Aero Friedrichshafen in April.
