Commercial Drone Deliveries Begin in the U.S.
Google's Wing unit began commercial drone deliveries last week in Virginia.

Google unit Wing began commercial package deliveries of over-the-counter medications, snacks, and gifts to residents of Christiansburg, Virginia, last week. Wing is the first company to operate an FAA-approved commercial air delivery service via drone directly to homes in the U.S. The company is collaborating with FedEx, Walgreens, and local Virginia retailer Sugar Magnolia to provide the service. As part of it, FedEx completed the first scheduled e-commerce drone delivery in the U.S., connecting online retailers to last-mile drone delivery services.

Customers can use the  Wing app to order from Walgreens or local Virginia retailer Sugar Magnolia items that are dispatched within minutes, or they can receive scheduled FedEx deliveries by drone. Once at the customer location, the aircraft gently lowers the package to a designated location in the yard or driveway, before returning to Wing’s base in North Christiansburg.
