The South St. Paul Municipal Airport (SGS) has started selling unleaded UL94 avgas provided by Swift Fuels. Swift produces and sells the only commercially available unleaded avgas in the U.S., and SGS is the first airport in Minnesota to sell unleaded avgas. UL94 is not a full replacement for 100LL and is compatible only with aircraft with engines requiring 94 motor-octane fuels or lower.
âWith a large portion of our airport traffic being piston-engine aircraft, we not only sought a cleaner-performing alternative to 100LL, we also needed a more durable option than recreational autogas,â said Andrew Wall, manager of SGS. âAutogas has a higher vapor pressure, which can contribute to vapor lock, and it has a much shorter shelf-life. Swiftâs UL94 solves these issues and it also eliminates lead-fouled sparkplugs, which greatly extends costly oil change maintenance intervals in relation to 100LL, which is a huge benefit to cost-conscious pilots.â
Swiftâs UL94 avgas will now be the only unleaded fuel distributed at SGS. âWeâre proud to continue to lead this multi-year initiative to educate the market on the key benefits of unleaded avgas," said Swift Fuels CEO Chris DâAcosta. "This can only happen with the ongoing support of forward-thinking regulators, aircraft/engine OEMs, pilots, airports, municipalities, airport boards, and supply chain folks.â
