ForeFlight has added a number of new features in the latest version–7.2–of its iOS app, including connectivity to Garmin avionics, graphical flight notifications, weight-and-balance profile syncing, improved winds aloft information and support for the newest Appareo Stratus 1S and 2S ADS-B receivers. Version 7.2 of ForeFlight Mobile is available now on the Apple App Store.

The new Stratus 1S and 2S ADS-B receivers improve on the original Stratus receivers, which were introduced three years ago by a partnership among Appareo, ForeFlight and Sporty’s. Both new Stratus units feature improved ADS-B reception via sensitive internal antennas, an automatic fan for better thermal capability and a USB-C power connector. For those concerned about security, the Stratus 1S and 2S Wi-Fi network can be hidden and WPA2 password protected.

The Stratus 1S receives single-band ADS-B traffic on the 978 MHz ADS-B In frequency and includes a Waas GPS receiver. The Stratus Replay feature keeps gathering weather information while the iPad’s screen is turned off to save power. The Stratus 1S retails for $549.

The Stratus 2S, for $899, adds dual-band ADS-B traffic (978 and 1090 MHz), built-in AHRS sensors, an integrated flight data recorder and pressure altitude sensor. The AHRS sensors drive the attitude indicate and synthetic vision display on the ForeFlight Mobile app. The pressure altitude sensor provides information to ForeFlight’s Cabin Pressure Advisor, which issues aural warnings when crossing through 12,000 and 25,000 feet msl. ForeFlight added this feature for barometric sensor equipped iPhones and iPads in Version 7.0 earlier this year, but with the sensor in the Stratus 2, older iPhones/iPads can use the Cabin Pressure Advisor.

ForeFlight Mobile 7.2 can now obtain ADS-B In weather and traffic information and GPS position from Garmin’s GDL 88/84 ADS-B Out/In transceivers via Garmin’s Connext system and Flight Stream Bluetooth gateways. ForeFlight’s attitude indicator and synthetic vision display receives pitch and bank information, weather and traffic from the Flight Stream 210. The Flight Stream 110 offers the same traffic and weather features, but not the pitch and bank information.

The previously announced Flight Notifications feature in ForeFlight now includes a graphic showing flight critical information to help pilots understand the alert. Notifications are provided for TFRs, airport/runway closed/unsafe Notams, urgent Pireps, Sigmets, convective Sigmets, Airmets, center weather advisories and severe weather watches/warnings that affect the filed route. Notifications are synced with all devices running ForeFlight, as are weight-and-balance profiles, recent and favorite routes, airports and weather imagery, user waypoints, scratch pads, filed flight plans and aircraft profiles.

Global winds and temperatures aloft information is more accurate with a forecast time step of three hours, according to ForeFlight, instead of six hours.

For Apple Watch owners, ForeFlight has improved the airports page with weather data for up to 30 airports, viewable in the Nearby, Recents and Favorites tabs.
