Garmin has reached out to other vendors and is offering compatibility to its wireless Connext system to display data from Garmin avionics on iPads running the ForeFlight Mobile and Jeppesen Mobile FliteDeck apps. This can include ADS-B weather and traffic, GPS position and back-up attitude information. Garmin is also offering this capability on its aera 796/795 portable GPSs.
The Connext system uses the Flight Stream 210 or 110 wireless gateway for portable devices to communicate with avionics via Bluetooth. Up to two portable devices are supported. The Flight Stream 110 provides ADS-B in weather and traffic, while the 210 adds flight plan syncing with the Garmin GTN750/650 and GNS 430W/530W navigators as well as attitude information.
On the ForeFlight Mobile app, Connext delivers ADS-B in weather and traffic information and GPS position from Garmin’s GDL 88/84 ADS-B out/in transceivers via Flight Stream. ForeFlight’s attitude indicator and synthetic vision display receives pitch and bank information from the Flight Stream 210. The new features are available on ForeFlight Mobile Version 7.2, which is now available.
Jeppesen’s Mobile FliteDeck “is expected to support the display of ADS-B traffic and weather, as well as WAAS GPS position information from a compatible source,” according to Garmin. An upcoming version of Mobile FliteDeck will include the new Garmin compatibility features.
