Organizers of the annual Sun ’n Fun Fly-In (Booth 3012) in Lakeland, Fla., traveled with current students and graduates of the Central Florida Aerospace Academy (CFAA) to EAA AirVenture 2013 to sample some of the educational opportunities available and volunteer at the EAA’s KidVenture interactive exhibit.
CFAA, located on the grounds of Lakeland-Linder Regional Airport (LAL) on the Sun ’n Fun campus, is a workforce academy extension of Polk County Schools. Students in the program assist with daily activities at the organization, including work on projects inside the 8,000-sq-ft Buehler Restoration Center adjacent to the Florida Air Museum.
Students are also eligible for membership in the Lakeland AeroClub, where they can take advantage of a 75-percent cash scholarship for flight lessons using the AeroClub’s fleet of Cessna 152 and 172 training aircraft, and Breezer light sport aircraft (LSA). Students may work off the remaining balance for flight lessons with volunteer service on behalf of the CFAA, or in the community.
Teens may also enlist in the U.S. Air Force Junior ROTC program at CFAA to experience some of the rigors of a military academy. Information about CFAA, recent renovations to the Florida Air Museum, and next year’s 40th Sun ’n Fun International Fly-In & Expo, is available at the Sun ’n Fun booth.
