Meggitt To Provide Brake-by-wire for Qatar’s Typhoons
Meggitt has also developed a new real-time brake monitoring system.

UK-based aerospace component/sub-system supplier Meggitt has been awarded a contract to provide its advanced braking systems for the Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft that have been ordered for the Qatari air force. Qatar signed a £5 billion ($7 billion) order for 24 Typhoons in September 2018, with the UK’s BAE Systems as the lead Eurofighter partner.

Meggitt is supplying wheels, carbon brakes, landing gear computers, and hydro-electric valves as part of the contract, with deliveries from this order set to begin in 2020, along with lifetime support, spares, ground equipment, and training. The contract follows similar deals for advanced brake-by-wire systems for the Typhoons ordered by Kuwait and Oman.

Recently, the company has developed a brake temperature monitoring system for the Typhoon that is available as an option primarily aimed at operations in hot-and-high conditions. The system provides real-time data that enables swifter turnrounds between missions and reduced waiting times for brake cooling after prolonged taxiing.
