Multi-role Transport Flies in from the North

Making its debut at the Paris Air Show is the Embraer KC-390 tanker/transport from Brazil. Its appearance here is part of a wider sales and demonstration tour in Europe and beyond. The aircraft arrived at Paris following an evaluation in Sweden, where the air force has an ageing fleet of six C-130 Hercules that will ultimately need replacement. The KC-390 is an obvious candidate, especially given the close ties between Brazil and Sweden that have been forged through the Gripen program. But any new transport purchase is likely to be some way off: at a briefing in Stockholm last month the head of Sweden’s air force department, Colonel Magnus Liljegren, outlined a plan to put the C-130s through a mid-life update in the 2020/22 period, which would allow them to serve until 2030/32.
