Infrared imaging specialist FLIR Systems this week is introducing an airborne camera system designed to provide ultra-high-definition images in challenging environments like urban centers. Called the Star Safire HD, the sensor system can include mega-pixel thermal, day and night sensors with high magnification optics and laser targeting equipment for covert illumination, the company said.

The Portland, Oregon-based FLIR Systems (Hall 3 Stand B11) announced it has landed a $32.8 million contract to supply the U.S. Army with the Star Safire HD and Safire III imaging systems. The units will be installed aboard aircraft and used to enhance perimeter security and force protection for U.S. troops stationed in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The stabilized infrared sensor systems allow operators to see more detail, to see from farther distances and to analyze tactical situations more quickly, the company said. The contract includes options to purchase additional units that would bring the total value of the deal to $61 million.
