Honeywell’s avionics gurus in Redmond, Washington, are developing what the company touts as being the world’s first integrated surveillance system (ISS) for a military transport, the Airbus A400M.

Similar to the aircraft environmental system that will 0fly aboard the Airbus A380, the A400M’s ISS provides protection from traffic, terrain and weather by incorporating Honeywell’s next-generation TCAS (traffic alert and collision avoidance system), TAWS (terrain awareness and warning system) and an advanced airborne weather radar system.

A civil ISS option for the A400M consists of dual ISS hardware and software. A Honeywell spokesman said the integration of the safety avionics promises significant cost savings over installing the systems separately.

Development will take place at Honewell’s research center in Redmond, the home of engineers responsible for some of the company’s most advanced safety products, including EGPWS (enhanced ground proximity warning system) and RAAS (runway awareness and advisory system).
