Matt Thurber, editor-in-chief at AIN Media Group, has been flying since 1975 and writing about aviation since 1978 and now has the best job in the world, running editorial operations for Aviation International News, Business Jet Traveler, and FutureFlight.aero. In addition to working as an A&amp;P mechanic on everything from Piper Cubs to turboprops, Matt taught flying at his father’s flight school in Plymouth, Mass., in the early 1980s, flew for an aircraft owner/pilot, and for two summer seasons hunted swordfish near the George’s Banks off the East Coast from a Piper Super Cub. An ATP certificated fixed-wing pilot and CFII and commercial helicopter pilot, Matt is type-rated in the Citation 500 and Gulfstream V/550. Garmin’s new Virb 360 action camera can record immersive videos that are stitched together to create a 360-degree view. The camera also produces stitched-together 15-megapixel spherical photos, and it captures video at up to 5.7K at 30 fps and has four microphones for multi-directional audio recording. Spherical stabilization ensures a smooth result.

 


To cut down on redundant footage, the Travelapse feature generates highlights from hours of video. The $799 camera has a built-in GPS receiver and Garmin’s G-Metrix data overlays. For easier operation, the Virb 360 offers voice control for starting and stopping recording, taking photos and other functions. Livestream capability is built in, for posting live video to YouTube or Facebook Live when interfaced with a compatible mobile device.
