Gama Aviation Climbing To New Heights for Clean Water
Gama Aviation employees to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds to put in new water infrastructure for Kiomboi hospital in Tanzania.

U.K.-based aviation services company Gama Aviation has assembled a team of employees to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds to bring clean water to a hospital nearby in Tanzania. The climb team, comprising 19 Gama Aviation employees along with five others, will launch on what is expected to be about a 10-day expedition on February 14.

The team was selected from throughout the company internationally, including pilots, operations managers, legal counsel and non-executive directors, among many others. With the exception of the team leaders, the team primarily includes first-time Kilimanjaro climbers. The team has been training over the past several months, and some members have accomplished smaller climbs in preparation.

Gama Aviation is funding the expedition as it raises money to put in a new water infrastructure for Kiomboi hospital in Tanzania. Gama Aviation has set a goal of raising £50,000 (close to $71,000), and so far has reached about half that mark. At the hospital, Gama Aviation said, “There is only enough water for one hour a day…. Because of the lack of water, heavily pregnant women have to collect dirty water from the unclean river to bring to the hospital to use for the birth of their own child. After they have given birth, they then have to walk back to the river to wash." The hospital handles about 8,000 births a year. “The mortality rate and severe infection rate is high.” Gama Aviation is working with WaterAid to provide toilets, showers, baths, hand washing sinks and hygiene education.

Gama Aviation will continue to accept donations through about mid-March.
