Bolen: Safety Efforts Must Involve Govt. Cooperation
Bolen reiterates NBAA's pledge to comply with the NTSB's recommendation on bizav compliance, saying government cooperation key to improving safety.

NBAA president and CEO Ed Bolen, reiterating NBAA’s pledge to comply with an NTSB recommendation on business aviation procedures compliance, told attendees at last week’s 2015 Bombardier Safety Standdown that safety must involve all facets of an operation, as well as outreach to government agencies such as the NTSB or FAA.

“For our safety efforts to be most effective, a safety focus must be ingrained in the work of all vocations within business aviation,” Bolen said, noting aviation safety is a cooperative effort for everyone. Safety efforts are more effective when they extend beyond the operation, he added. “We must continue our effective collaborative efforts with government officials,” Bolen said. He cited NBAA’s plans to work with business aviation flight operational quality assurance groups to analyze data for noncompliance with preflight check requirements. This effort stemmed from an NTSB recommendation following its investigation of last year’s Gulfstream GIV-SP accident in Bedford, Mass.

The association relies on a data-driven approach to evaluating its other safety focus areas, Bolen added. The NBAA Safety Committee has identified loss of control and runway excursions as two of its 2015 top safety focus areas. NBAA is working on tools and planning two sessions at its annual convention next month in Las Vegas that will delve into these and other topics. The sessions include the NBAA Single-Pilot Safety Standdown and the association’s first NBAA National Safety Forum. “We must continue to develop safety products and best practices,” said Bolen.
