TrueNorth Simphone DLU Selected for FANS Upgrade
The Simphone FANS-1/A DLU Iridium satcom simplifies position reporting and communication with controllers over North Atlantic routes.

A U.S. government program selected the TrueNorth Avionics Simphone FANS-1/A Data Link Unit Plus to upgrade 12 Citation Ultras. The Simphone DLU is the only FANS-over-Iridium system that holds FAA, Transport Canada and EASA certification to TSO C159a, according to TrueNorth. Equipage with Future Air Navigation System (FANS) capability is required for some North Atlantic routes and altitudes, and more will be added to the requirement in the future.

With FANS-1/A approval, pilots can fly more direct routes with less spacing, and the equipment automatically transmits position information to ATC and allows text-type messaging between pilots and controllers. “This simplified communication removes language issues like accents, reduces communications error and lowers crewmember stress,” the company explained.

The TSO approval for the TrueNorth Simphone DLU simplifies development of STC installation packages, according to TrueNorth CEO Mark van Berkel. “Another advantage operators will see with TrueNorth’s DLU is that it connects easily to a wide range of FMSs—no configuration required. This promotes shorter installation times, while helping to reduce associated costs and aircraft downtime.”
