Former Boston Transit Chief Selected for NTSB Vacancy
Beverly Scott would bring a long background of transit administration and safety to her new role, but may face scrutiny on Capitol Hill.

The White House has nominated former Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) chief Beverly Scott to become the next National Transportation Safety Board member. If confirmed, Scott would serve a term through Dec. 31, 2019, filling the vacancy created when former member Mark Rosekind became the administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in December.

Scott would bring a long background in transit administration and safety to the position. In addition to serving as general manager of MBTA, she has served as general manager of the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority, Sacramento Regional Transit District and Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority. In 2011, she also was appointed by President Obama to the National Infrastructure Advisory Council.

But Scott may face some scrutiny as she goes through the nomination process on Capitol Hill for past controversies. She resigned from MBTA unexpectedly earlier this year as she came under public criticism for her handling of delays and track closures during heavy winter storms. Also, Scott reportedly had faced management issues with her executive team in Atlanta as it struggled through budget deficits.
