The new aviation-specific version of Garmin’s Virb XE action camera is available now or in an aviation bundle in the third quarter. The aviation bundle, at $499.99, includes the camera, a headset audio cable, propeller filter, 16-GB microSD card, suction-cup mount and a free trial of the Garmin Pilot app. During EAA AirVenture, Garmin is offering buyers of the Virb XE a free suction-cup and SD card.

The Virb XE is gyro-stabilized and also can receive attitude information from Garmin avionics wirelessly via the Garmin Flight Stream Bluetooth device. Virb XE users can record ATC and intercom audio with the headset audio cable. The XE can record up to two hours of HD video on a single battery charge. Garmin D2 watch owners can connect to the Virb XE via Garmin’s ANT+, and the XE is also equipped with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi as well as its own GPS receiver.

Currently the Virb XE can be controlled from the iOS version of Garmin Pilot, and Android compatibility is expected later this year.
