KaiserAir Fans 1/A Solution for GIV Gets FAA Nod
Fans is currently required for North Atlantic operations between FL350 and FL390, though it eventually will be expanded to cover more altitudes.

KaiserAir received FAA STC approval for a Fans 1/A solution in the Gulfstream GIV. The STC covers installation of a Universal Avionics flight management system, cockpit voice recorder and Uni-link communication management system. Fans is currently required for North Atlantic operations between FL350 and FL390, though it eventually will be expanded to cover more altitudes.

In the initial Fans installation, the company leveraged a Gogo Business Aviation Axxess satcom system that was already on board on the GIV. “We worked closely with Gogo on the first of type certification for its Fans-compliant Iridium transceiver and data interface unit,” noted KaiserAir director of maintenance marketing Rick Brainard. “So the system uses the Iridium short-burst data for its connectivity to air traffic control. However, our design can integrate with virtually any Fans-compliant system.”

KaiserAir is scheduling installations for the Fans equipment, which can be completed in as little as eight days, it said. “The installation is fairly simple,” according to Brainard. “However, if we need to add a Fans-approved communication system, the installation could take additional time.”
