The European Helicopter Safety Team (EHST) is distributing a new pamphlet, Techniques for Helicopter Operations in Hilly and Mountainous Terrain, to help pilots and instructors appreciate the most important aspects of mountain flying and the risks associated with it. The pamphlet, which includes diagrams and best practices, emphasizes the need for pilots to clearly understand their own limitations.
EHST proposed the following recommendations: being aware of aircraft performance and limitations; studying navigational charts carefully and not simply relying only upon GPS; being certain to study the most up-to-date weather before making any go/no-go decision; being alert for signs of changing weather (such as wind direction and speed); avoiding any mountain flights when the winds exceed 25 knots; always planning an escape route; being prepared for windshear and understanding the proper recovery/exit actions; being aware of the psychological and physiological effects of mountain flying; and finally, being certain they receive the proper training with a qualified mountain pilot.
