Boeing received the launch order for the Boeing Business Jet Max yesterday. The order, from an undisclosed existing BBJ operator, is for a BBJ Max 8, a derivative based on the 737 Max 8.


“We are honored that an existing BBJ customer has become the first to select the BBJ Max,” said Boeing Business Jets president Steve Taylor. “The BBJ Max provides more room, longer range and produces fewer emissions than its nearest competition, making it an ideal choice for today’s BBJ customers.”


With new-technology CFM International Leap-1B engines and reshaped winglets, the 737 Max will burn 14 percent less fuel than current single-aisle airliners, says Boeing. This fuel-burn improvement is even greater on the longer legs typically flown by BBJ customers, Boeing Business Jets noted. In fact, the BBJ Max 8 will have a range of 6,325 nm, some 800 nm more than the BBJ2. The new aircraft series will also include the 6,255-nm BBJ Max 9; plans for a BBJ Max 7 are still being studied.


Boeing expects to fly the 737 Max in 2016 and start deliveries to airlines in 2017, followed by delivery of the first green BBJ Max 8 to the launch customer’s choice of completion center in 2018.
