An Environmental Good Conduct Code is now in place at popular Cannes Mandelieu Airport and signed by multiple stakeholders, including the French DGAC, numerous civil aircraft operators, air traffic controllers, airport tenants and various local environmental groups.

The code is voluntary, addresses primarily noise-control issues and calls for the signers to “respect the quality of the environment at and around l’Aéroport Cannes Mandelieu.”

Airport authorities note that no fewer than seven towns and villages are either under or adjacent to approach and departure paths, and for this reason the airport measures aircraft noise daily for the towns and villages of Cannes, Mandelieu-la-Napoule and Roquette-sur-Siagne.

As part of noise-abatement procedures already in place, the airport does not accept scheduled airline traffic or aircraft with an mtow of more than 22 metric tons. The airport is also open only from 30 minutes before sunrise until 30 minutes after sunset (or 8 p.m., whichever is later). On landing, operators of both jets and turboprops are prohibited from using reverse thrust above idle power unless for safety reasons.

According to airport neighbor relations and environment officer Claire Rousseau, the code is meant as “a living document” and will be reviewed as necessary with the signatories. Meetings will be held to share technical information, assess the efficiency of measures in place, examine new proposals and define training or information requirements.
