In anticipation of increased capacity needs, Hong Hong’s government has approved an expansion plan that will give Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) a third runway. Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) believes that construction will start within three years.

“We thank the government and the public for their support of HKIA,” said Dr. Marvin Cheung Kin-tung, chairman of AAHK. “Our airport’s future development into a three-runway system is crucial if we are to maintain Hong Kong’s status as a leading international and regional aviation centre.”

The development is part of the airport’s master plan for 2030 and, according to the AAHK, it will immediately begin planning process involving environmental impact assessments, approvals and implementation. “Once the process is completed and the environmental permit is obtained for proceeding with a third runway, we will finalize the necessary associated design and develop suitable financial options for discussion with the government,” said the airport authority.
