The recently released ForeFlight Mobile v4.2 iPad app now allows users to display XM WX inflight weather data overlaid on maps displayed on the ForeFlight app. XM WX works with the Baron Mobile Link device and an XM receiver (from Baron or Heads Up Technologies), both of which communicate wirelessly with the iPad. ForeFlight said its app designers color-matched existing Internet-based weather graphics with XM radar “so that the presentation is consistent before and during flight.” XM data feeds are also integrated with ForeFlight maps, including flight rules, TFRs, Airmets, Sigmets, temperature, dew point and so on. A useful new feature in v4.2 is interactive TFRs, which can be layered on top of maps and charts. TFRs can be loaded on the ground for display in the air or with Mobile Link, updated via XM WX, and tapping on a TFR displays applicable information about the restriction. Other enhancements include adjustable transparency for overlays, a new world map, ForeFlight global winds engine, printable navlogs using AirPrint-capable printers and refined airway processing.
