The recycling program recently launched at Gulfstream Aerospace’s Savannah and Brunswick, Ga. facilities has saved more than 600 tons of recyclables from reaching landfills. This includes 782,620 pounds of wood recycled in Savannah between November and June, and 433,940 pounds of paper, metal, plastic and cardboard diverted from landfills between February and June. Before February, Gulfstream recycled 23 percent of its municipal solid waste; by June, that number had climbed to 41 percent. To date, Gulfstream Savannah has reduced its landfill trash by one-third compared with last year. Facilities and security services director Brooks Clark credits Gulfstream employees for the program’s success, saying they have been “extremely diligent about recycling” since the launch of the recycling program in February. The company plans to replicate the recycling program at its other facilities. Gulfstream has also signed on to the general aviation industry’s objectives of achieving carbon-neutral growth by 2020, improving aircraft fuel efficiency by 2 percent per year from 2010 until 2050 and reducing its total carbon dioxide emissions to 50 percent of 2005 levels by 2050.
