Yesterday CitationAir became the third of the four major jet fractional providers to have a unionized pilot workforce, with 52 percent of the more then 350 CitationAir pilots voting in favor of representation. Pilot voting turnout was “high,” International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) 1108 president Mat Slinghof told AIN, and only a simple majority (50 percent plus one vote) was needed for the union to be voted in. IBT Local 1108, which was formed by activist NetJets pilots in 2005 with the intent of unionizing all pilots at the fractional providers, will represent the pilot group. “Today is a proud day…CitationAir pilots have decided in favor of having a real voice in their futures,” the newly established CitationAir Pilots Leadership Council said in a statement. The council members will lead the CitationAir pilot union and handle collective bargaining with the company in the interim until a master executive council (MEC) can be elected. CitationAir officials were not available for comment at press time. Flight Options’ pilots have been represented by Local 1108 since voting in a union in March 2006; NetJets pilots were represented by 1108 from the Local’s inception until May 2008, when they left to form an in-house union. Union-organizing “card drives” are still active at Flexjet and Avantair, according to Slinghof.
