The National Research Council of Canada (NRC) has launched an initiative called Aircraft Cabin Environment Technologies (ACET) to develop, apply and evaluate technologies for healthy and comfortable aircraft cabin environments in pressurized fixed-wing aircraft. Key areas for technology development include acoustics, lighting, ventilation, indoor air quality and health.  “NRC does research for companies that contract with them. It’s a government agency staffed with researchers and has expertise in various fields, including aerospace. The council has extensive facilities including wind tunnels, icing tunnels and aerodynamic labs,” a spokesman told AIN. NRC comprises more than 20 institutes and national programs, spanning a wide variety of disciplines. The NRC Institute for Aerospace Research (NRC Aerospace) is managing the cabin technologies initiative. NRC is interested in partnering with companies from the aerospace sector to develop the next generation of aircraft environmental technologies that will enhance passenger and flight crew experience while potentially reducing aircraft construction and operating cost.
