In its certification of 3-D digital design data in the completion of Falcon business jets at Dassault’s Little Rock, Ark. factory, one key concern of the FAA was ensuring data conservation. Data has to be kept for 70 years, to take into account the service life of the last manufactured aircraft in a type. One way to achieve this is to convert the data into “neutral” formats that are independent of the software and can be read even though the original computer-aided design tool is no longer available.
