Structural assembly work done by Canada-based Avcorp will be transitioned back to Cessna facilities and other suppliers, according to a Cessna spokesman. Avcorp manufactures Citation CJ3 vertical stabilizer, rudder and center wing box assemblies, Sovereign empennage and wing spars and CJ4 components. Avcorp also builds the horizontal stabilizer and fuel tanks for Bombardier’s Challenger 605 and was tapped to build HondaJet wings. Honda Aircraft, however, is building the wings for conforming test HondaJets and the company is considering keeping wing construction in-house, according to president and CEO Michimasa Fujino. Avcorp will continue filling Cessna orders, according to Avcorp, “until transition, and the transition timeline is not yet defined. A production transition plan, as well as a remuneration agreement, is subject of discussion.” Cessna is planning to move Sovereign wing spar production to a Wichita supplier and CJ3 wing boxes to Cessna’s Independence, Kan., facility, according to the spokesman. A new “strategic” supplier in Mexico will build Sovereign, CJ3 and CJ4 empennages. “Full transition is expected to be complete by 2012,” he said. No information was available about why Avcorp is losing the Cessna business, but according to an Avcorp financial document, “Within the supply chain for Cessna programs, as well as a manufacturing deficiency for an Aviation Partners Boeing program, the Company experienced quality issues giving rise to warranty expenditures, for which the Company is currently implementing corrective and preventive measures.”
