Bonus Depreciation Passes House, Senate

General aviation groups hailed the passage late last month of a bonus depreciation bill, H.R.5297, that will allow for accelerated depreciation of business aircraft. The House of Representatives already passed this legislation in June, but had to vote on it again on September 23 because the Senate’s version approved a week earlier contained minor differences. At press time, H.R.5297 was en route to President Obama, who earlier pledged to sign the bill. Aircraft purchased before the end of this year must be placed into service by the end of next year to qualify for bonus depreciation, which permits a business to accelerate 50 percent of the depreciable value of a capital investment in the first year instead of spreading it over five years. Bonus depreciation has increased aircraft sales in past years, and is expected to do so again this year.
