The Nor’Easter that tore through the Northeast over the weekend caused flooding damage and power outages throughout the region and spurred New Jersey to declare a state of emergency. At Teterboro (N.J.) Airport, wind gusts of nearly 60 miles per hour were reported, knocking out power to the control tower and remote antenna transmitters around 6 p.m. Saturday, resulting in an immediate switch to back-up batteries. According to an FAA spokesperson, commercial power had yet to be restored as of this morning. As a result, the tower could soon be required to switch to backup frequencies as reserve batteries become exhausted. The south side of the airport seemed to be the most affected by the storm. Aircraft in several Port Authority hangars were evacuated due to the power issues affecting the fire protection systems. First Aviation Services, which also lost power, remained fully operational on its backup generators. Jet Aviation, which temporarily lost telephone service, was also forced to switch to emergency generators and suffered some minor flooding in its administrative offices, causing the FBO to relocate some personnel to a nearby hotel. Both FBOs reported that power was restored early yesterday.
