Last November, Ruag Aerospace rolled out the new version of the Dornier Do-228 twin turboprop, the 228NG, and began the flight-test program for the resurrected airplane. Ruag’s board of directors decided to bring the 228 back into production in October 2007. The first 228NG took to the skies over Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany, on November 12. More than 350 modifications bring the new 228 to modern standards, including a new glass cockpit, five-blade propellers, new landing gear design and a new cabin layout seating 19 passengers. Major airframe components, including wings, fuselage and empennage, are made by Hindustan Aeronautics in Kanpur, India. Final assembly and completions are done at Ruag’s Oberpfaffenhofen factory. Certification is on track for next month, according to the company.
