The National Aviation Hall of Fame (NAHF) announced that Sarah Bryn Rickman is this year’s recipient of the seventh annual Combs Gates Award. An aviation author and historian, Rickman received the $20,000 cash award for her trilogy based on the women pilots of the Ferry Command. Through exceptional research and first-hand interviews, Rickman tells the stories of women pilots who flew more than 12,650 domestic aircraft movements totaling nine million miles in 72 different warplane models. The award was presented during the NBAA Opening General Session on Tuesday by Amanda Wright-Lane, great-grandniece of Orville and Wilbur Wright, together with four enshrinees of the NAHF. The Combs Gates Award grew out of a donation to the NAHF from the late and legendary Harry Combs.
