The <a href="http://gama.aero/files/documents/2009ShipmentReport.pdf" target="_blank">number</a> of aircraft delivered in the first quarter of this year paled in comparison with the same period last year, according to numbers released this afternoon by the General Aviation Manufacturers Association, which cited the global economy’s effects on general aviation. The total number of business jets delivered in the first quarter was 191, down considerably from last year’s record tally of 297 deliveries in the first three months, but still above the first-quarter 2006 delivery tally of 188. In the turboprop segment, first-quarter deliveries rose by two year-over-year to reach 87. Piston aircraft deliveries saw severe erosion, with less than half the deliveries this first quarter (179) than in the same period last year (399). Total industry billings also declined by $1 billion to $4.3 billion in the first quarter, compared with the first three months of last year. “This is an extremely difficult time for our industry,” said GAMA president and CEO Pete Bunce. “We are dealing first and foremost with the severe negative effects of a worldwide economic downturn, but also with unwarranted criticism focused on the industry. The result has been the cancellation of orders for new airplanes and the loss of more than 15,000 high-paying jobs…over the last several months. The reality is that the U.S. general aviation industry leads the world in innovation and remains one of the few American industries with a positive balance of trade.”
