The Houston City Council voted in January to change the name of Houston’s oldest airport from Ellington Field to Ellington Airport in an effort to “broaden the future use of the airport with high hopes it will grow as a business asset.” Ellington offers much less congestion than nearby Hobby Airport with its busy airline operations and it is served by two FBOs, Volo Aviation and Southwest Airport Services. Ellington has three runways, the longest at 9,001 feet, and the airport is also home to NASA’s two high-altitude WB-57Fs, the only remaining flying versions of what began as the English Electric Canberra light bomber in 1949 and later morphed into the Martin B-57 Canberra for service in the U.S.
