The FAA has issued a technical standard order and blanket installation approval covering 850 aircraft models for the CNX80 all-in-one GPS navcom from Salem, Ore.-based UPS Aviation Technologies. The company, a subsidiary of parcel shipping giant UPS, lays claim to being one of the first avionics manufacturers to gain FAA certification for a GPS receiver approved for WAAS instrument approaches. The FAA last month officially commissioned the wide-area augmentation system, flipping the switch at midnight on July 9 from its ATC command center in Herndon, Va. (see page 1). WAAS consists of a network of satellites and ground stations that provide GPS signal corrections for use by properly equipped aircraft on special satnav instrument approaches. The $11,995 (list price) CNX80, available through UPSAT dealers, features a 3.8-inch-diagonal color LCD and houses a VHF nav with VOR/LOC/GS and 760-channel com transceiver.
