Garmin late last month announced a deal to buy UPS Aviation Technologies, a subsidiary of United Parcel Service, for $38 million in cash. The acquisition is expected to close this quarter, after which UPS Aviation Technologies will change its name to Garmin AT. With about 150 employees in Salem, Ore., the company is best known for its development of automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) avionics as part of the FAA’s Safe Flight 21 and Alaska Capstone programs. UPSAT also recently certified the CNX80 GPS navcom, a competitor to the Garmin GNS 430 and 530, but which differentiates itself by being the first panel-mount navigator approved for WAAS primary navigation.
